660nm G10 Tests

OK, got the camera yesterday and took it out today. Very nice IR camera system with good exposure sensitivity. It is about +2ev over my 715nm G10. EXIF data is intact so that you can look it over. All shots are hand held. I am REALLY pleased with this conversion and think that it might turn into my main IR system. The enhanced color modification takes a little getting used to due to the extreme colors, but the B&W conversions are pleasing so the camera gives me the best of both worlds. The real surprise to me was the extra 2 stops of exposure sensitivity! The camera white balances ok and focus is very sharp. The conversion was in one day and shipped the next. What more could you ask for?

Canon G10? Good, Bad, Meh?

Been thinking of getting the G10 for hiking and travel. I mainly carry my Nikon D80 and a couple of lenses when hiking but it can get heavy quickly. The G10 seems to fit most my main needs. Good IQ, exposure control, RAW, wide to moderate zoom lens, good qaulity build, small, etc. I’m thinking it would be perfect to stuff in my backpack. This last summer I did a 17 mile hike up to about 7K and back and even the lightweight D80 and two lenses started to feel like a lead brick.

G10 macros: could a DSLR do better?

Consider this a rhetorical question. I could take turn it into a non-rhetorical one by taking pictures of the same subjects with my 5D/EF100 f/2.8 macro, but I know it wouldn’t be easy (I’d have to use a tripod for sure, and close down to get the depth of field that’s needed). Anyway, I doubt if the 5D combo would do appreciably better.

AE Lock doesn’t work after viewing photos

Hi there, maybe I’m missing something but I noticed a strange thing with the behavior of the AE Lock button today while shooting. I was trying to compose a silhouette shot and couldn’t get the AE Lock to work, ie no display of shutter and aperture values, no star on the screen. I was shooting in Av mode.

Canon G10 defect must read

I noticed the line on one picture recently but didn’t think too much of it because I don’t think it’s done it since. From the Canon site - “Occurrence of this phenomenon is due to the camera settings”. So I wonder if I’ll ever use the same combination of settings to make it do it again…….I’m considering sending it in at the moment unless someone can change my mind.

G10 pix not sharp

I’ve been comparing my G10 shots with some from my old Panasonic DMC-LC1, as well as some from my Nikon SLRs, current and former (D80, D300, D90). I usually shoot the G10 on Program mode, auto ISO, and AiAF. Should I stop down just a bit? Also, the G10 seems to have considerably limited dynamic range, at least in my shots, with a tendency to blow highlights.

Would you buy another G10?

The G10 in my view, currenly serves as an almost perfect compact camera design, a signpost for the rest of the market to take heed too. There are some things I’d like added to it, but for what I love about the G10 and what I don’t love, all seem to add up to a near perfect personality. Without its limitations (if it were perfect which we know no camera can be), I fear it wouldn’t have that extra bit of personality that makes it so darn attractive to make images with.

G10 For Portraits? You Bet!

More of a snapshot than an elaborate portrait session… a cramped doctor’s waiting room, strong backlighting from the window, mixed office lightning… mother and daughter sharing an iPod (or shall I say biPod?).

Are you sending your G10 in for repair?

Even if you don’t know if it’s defective? What can it hurt? Mine falls in the s/n range of those which could possibly have the line issue. Will Canon TS look for the defect and fix it along with other problems that may exist (as some have reported) or could new problems (dust, bad reassembly) be induced during a stripdown?

G10 ISO test

I just bought a new Canon G10 because I wanted a “pocket” camera to bring along with me when I travel. I on and off thought about this for over a year and finally decided to go with the G10.

G10 b&w at 800 iso

Shot this portrait of my daughter this weekend, this camera continues to impress me, just love the handling. This was shot as jpeg in b&w, but has had pp done.

FYI: Canon G10 Recall Notice

One of the problems was an intermittent all-blue image which was fixed in a recent firmware update. The blue image problem has not recurred since the firmware update. Next, I need to arrange to send in my G10 for this problem
