The best cameras for summer 2009 photography
Panasonic LX-3
This camera has been in heavy competition with the Canon G10. The main advantages this camera has over the Canon is a wider lens and HD video mode and it is a bit smaller than the G10. While it doesn’t have the reach of those superzooms (in fact the zoom is only 2.5x) you’ll take good photos with its 10MP sensor and a lens that’s fast enough at F2. In fact, LX-3 users have been known to get the accessories that come with the camera. The above picture is the LX-3 from Nokton, a Flickr user that customized the LX-3 to be something more than it already is. The LX-3 can be used well in the hands of most people–whether new or experienced.

Canon G10
Walking down the streets of New York City, you see this camera in the hands of many people. It’s a much-loved camera that, when you look at it, reminds you a bit of the rangefinders of the film days. It has its own easy modes but also allows users to go fully manual in their settings to adjust for the exact shot that one wants. With 14.7MP, 5x Optical zoom, and all those wheels to help you set the image to be exactly what you want it to be, it is by one one of the best cameras for street photography for the average person. The only downer is that it only shoots Standard Definition video, so no HD on this one. If you want that, you’ll have to go for the SX1 or Canon’s latest DSLR–the T1i.
