Shooting RAW - it’s Easy!

The Canon Powershot G10 has the capability to save the photos you shoot as JPG, RAW, or both at the same time. A lot of G10 users don’t know what RAW is and why you would want to shoot with it. For an explanation of what RAW is and the pros and cons of using RAW instead of JPG, I encourage you read a layman’s argument for shooting RAW and a more comprehensive explanation of RAW. My goal here is not to explain RAW (visit the links!). My goal is to convince G10 users who have never tried shooting RAW that it is a lot easier than it sounds. In fact it’s downright easy! RAW editing is a great first step into digital photo editing and powerful enough that it is used by professionals. See for yourself: below is a picture of the only RAW toolbar in Digital Photo Professional (DPP), the RAW editing software that comes with the G10.

Is RAW critical with G10

I know this has been talked to death but I still would like to learn RAW and am wondering if JPEG with my G10 is good enough. I take a lot of pics in my yard due to personal reasons but I do get out as often as possible for something different to shoot. Do you think RAW is necessary for my kind of shooting? I have tried every converter that came out and my pics all look the same on RAW screen as JPEG, and I don’t know how to make them look a lot better. Am considering Kelby or Evening’s books since I get more from a book than tuts. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Confirmed: G10 beats T1i with ‘kit’ lens

Well I just purchased a Rebel T1i (with 18-55 IS lens - improved over previous 18-55 lens) and while I am looking to get the Sigma 18-250 OS HSM lens shortly to go with it (and replace the kit lens) I thought in the meanwhile I’d shoot the kit lens against my G10 (ISO80 vs ISO100 for T1i) and it was confirmed that the G10 at base ISO retains/resolves ‘slightly’ more fine detail and even after PP the T1i can’t quite equal the G10 for sharpness and (believe it or not) overall IQ. BTW this is jpg to jpg. Why do I even feel need to mention this? … well with all the negative press the G10 sometimes gets it must be said that Canon really worked wonders with it at lower ISO’s (even with the extra MP’s) and that the new lens used in the G10 ain’t to shabby … but it must also be said that above ISO200 and speed-wise the T1i blows the doors off the G10 LOL.

G10: Size Comparison vs. F30, F200EXR, and LX3

As some of you might know, I own all four of compacts that are currently popular in enthusiast circles, F30, F200EXR, G10, and LX3. Also, as some of you might also know, I have been intending to do their side by side comparison, which has been little long in the coming due to lack of time, taking back seat to higher priorities (which I am sure those of us with actual life can relate to).

stop dreaming, wishing… APS-C sensor powershot G

This is from “a known source that gets some things right” at canonrumors.com. Thank a god that somebody has come to their senses. Probably has been in development for a while, but EP-1 speeding things up? This camera better have a viewfinder and a built in flash.

Three G10 pics

Random shots, green weed was sticking out at an angle in an abandoned pathway, the lake was in mountains and hard rain which kept me from getting closer. Hope you like. Lake was ISO 400, 1/125, f4-other 2 at 1/60, f3.5, ISO80

Just got a G10, question on EV with flash….

OK, just got a G10 a few days ago to replace a low end Pany p+s camera to carry with me weekly (I travel each week for work). I have had for about 5 years now a D70 with SB 600 speedlight,12-24, 24-85 and 70-300 lenses but I wanted something compact to throw in my briefcase with a wide angle lens, full manual control and sturdy feel so the G10 was my choice. I gota say I love this little camera…The menu seems very logical and the build quality top-notch…I am going to love having real shooting modes (M, Tv, Av ect….) without the bulk and weight of a DSLR (this weekly road warrior likes to travel light) On to my question….WHY is it that when the flash is ON the EV dial seems to do nothing?? Is this by design or is there some setting someplace I am missing??

Best G10 Settings for Pop Concerts??

Hello, I need some advice on the settings I should use on my canon G10 to get good shots at “pop concerts” and other similar events in JPEG. The lighting is often low and changing fast, there’s a lot of fast action/dancing/etc on stage and the distance to stage is often between 15-40 meters. Should I put it in shutter-priority mode at something like 1/80 sec, 200/400ISO, use one of the scene modes, leave it on auto or do something else?? Any advice on this would be truly appreciated, thanks.

What is the best G10 tripod combination?

Yes, I know this is a very subjective question but I would like some advice on the best tripod combination to get for a G10. FYI I live in the UK, so don’t want the hassle / added cost of importing from the USA. My requirements are as follows:

G10 or LX3? Specific questions to help make my decision

I am looking to buy a digital camera. started with the following considerations. A digital camera with 1. Manual controls 2. Viewfinder (not strict about this) 3. Wide angle (at least 28mm) 4. At least TV quality video: Expect to take short video - family occasions (HD video a plus) and 5. Image stabilization

RAW Problem on G10

I have a D40, CS3, have tried to install ACR 4.6 (but I can’t verify that it’s in there). A week ago my G10 arrived. I shot pictures at a party (shouldn’t have) in RAW. They displayed properly on my camera’s screen. I uploaded them to my Mac G5 (dual 2.5 processors), running OS X 10.5.5. Also installed the software on the disk that came with the camera. The original memory card was a SD 4G SanDisk but once it indicated there were problems writing to the card I returned it and borrowed from a friend another SD SanDisk 2G. In the mail today came a SanDisk Extreme III SDHC but I’m at work and I haven’t been able to try it, but I doubt it will make any difference.

I’m liking the G10

I’ve had this a couple of months and just recently starting shooting more than family snapshots. I took these during a short (too short) trip to the Eastern Sierras. The size allows me to take it where I would be unwilling to lug something larger - but, I geuss I’m in the minority in wishing it had a removable lens cover instead of the integrated one.

G!0 Available-Light Portrait @ ISO 800

This is why I love G10: there when you need it, when the opportunity presents itself. Alfresco dinner at a local restaurant… available light just after sunset… slightly bored ten-year old daughter… focal length (equivalent) of 100 mm, 1/25s @ f/4, ISO 800. Minimally cropped and processed in Lightroom 2 (default noise reduction, i.e., zero luminance and 25 chroma noise reduction). Eat your heart out, those who swear G10 is unusable past ISO 200

It seems that you are using ad blocking software. Just like me.
