Low light photos at a party without using the flash - tips please!

Can anybody suggest how I can get the best out of my G10 at a party I’m going to this weekend? It’ll be a disco, so the lighting is likely to be low, but I’m not allowed to use the flash (long story, will cause health problems for the guest of honour!). I’m not an expert at all, and mostly use the G10 in fully automatic mode so I’m hoping for suggestions that are idiot-proof! ;-)

The G10 is sweet…

I have a 40D with good glass but when I got to the grand canyon i didnt want to haul it around so I bought a g10….. So I then took it to Lake Mead.

What accessories do you have on your G10

Just got my G10 not to long, and just wondering what kind of accessories everyone has. Pictures might be good!

G10 along the creek today

Nothing great just a few from my hike today. I used ‘P’ mode, handheld with ISO fixed at 80 and ND filter used on all but 2nd shot (I wanted to show the difference it makes on the water) … a nice smooth flow (I’ve said it before but that ND filter was nice of Canon to include on the G10) Slight PP done on these.

G10 Flash Sync Speed Is 1/2000???

Can anybody verify this: The flash sync speed on the G10 is 1/2000 even though the manual (CDI-E374-02G, 2008, page 267) says it’s 1/250. Yes, I mean 1/2000. I just attached a Vivitar 285HV at 1/16 power to the hot shoe, set the G10 to Manual mode with ISO 100, aperture 2.8 and exposure 1/60 and took a shot in a place with not that much ambient light. I also covered the built-in flash with my finger. I then cranked the exposure to 1/2000 and took the same shot (still covering the built-in flash). The only difference I see is less ambient in the 1/2000 shot. Specifically, I’m not seeing a difference in brightness, vignetting nor horizontal nor vertical lines that would indicate I had gone over the sync speed.

G10 and wide-angle adapter

I have been reading a few posts where people talked of using wide-angle adapters on their G9 and G10, and wondering what kind of quality people get. The Canon wide-angle lens (WC-DC58B) is a 0.75x lens, taking the G10 to 21mm equivalent. Does anyone have some decent-sized examples of photographs taken with this rig - is the edge-to-edge sharpness reasonable? What about other brands of wide-angle lens? Raynox, Sony, other? I know that some are suitable for HD video cameras but not much more… Which brands should I go for and which to avoid?

Best flash for Canon G9 and G10

Confession: Love these cameras!!! Desire: The best flash that works with Canon dedication, has an articulated head (on camera bounce flash) and can be used with the ttl capabilities of the cameras. Insane Dream: To get rid of all the DSLR’s and medium format cameras and shoot entirely with a bagful of these little G-whiz cameras. Any advice on the flash?
