Never, never, never believe what a reviewer tells you

The common thread seems to be that readers are looking for a small camera. They tire of lugging around a DSLR and lenses. They want the freedom that a small camera can provide. And they want quality images.

I want those things too. And frankly, there is still not a camera on the market today that meets all my needs. Camera manufacturers give me incredible cameras and lenses, but with the burden of carrying around 25 pounds of stuff. Grumble.

But, I think that the Canon Powershot G10 sorta fills that special need that so many have, small and light, easy to carry. And, at least it is as good as any other small camera on the market.

Time to answer some questions:

  • Will the G10 enable me to capture photos like yours?
  • Will the G10 replace my DSLR?
  • Other reviewers don’t like the G10, why do you like it?
  • Should I buy the Canon Powershot G10?
  • Do you have any suggestions for G10 settings?
  • How can I improve my photography?

G10 and bokeh

I mentioned that photography professionals aren’t in exact agreement as to what constitutes good bokeh. If we limit the definition of bokeh to out-of-focus backgrounds that help draw the eyes to the subject then, yes, the G10 is very much capable of creating blurry backgrounds.

In macro mode, the leaves surrounding the zinnia flower above were sufficiently blurred to send the visual message that they are not as important in the photo as the flower is.

Now, if the question is whether the Canon Powershot G10 can create light spheres which seem to be the obsession of most bokeh fanatics, the answer is yes.

Modifications For Macro and Wide Angle Underwater Photography

The Canon G10 is a nice digital camera. I especially like it for its 28mm wide angle, macro mode and because Canon provides an inexpensive and compact housing for it. However, in my opinion, the Canon housing can’t take great macro photos because the camera can’t get close enough to the subject due to the port length. Because of this I decided to modify my Canon G10 housing. I will introduce you to my modification, which hopefully will help you.

My Canon G10 modification:

  1. A open-close type 67mm lens adapter,
  2. A LED focus light,
  3. A slave mini strobe and
  4. A LCD screen finder on the housing.
